Considering parenting

Many women who walk into our centers ultimately choose to parent, even if it was not the plan. Parenting is hard. It is also the most common choice in unplanned pregnancies, and there is real support available in the Merrimack Valley to make it work.

How to think it through

Some questions worth sitting with: Who in my life would step up? What does my work or school situation look like? What are the practical needs in the first six months? What support do I have for the first six years? You don't need to have all the answers. Most parents don't.

Support that exists

Massachusetts has parental leave protections, MassHealth coverage for prenatal and infant care, WIC for nutritional support, and a wide network of community programs. Locally, partner organizations in Haverhill, Lawrence, and Lowell offer parenting classes, material assistance, and ongoing peer support.

What we do here

Our peer advocates will meet with you for as long as support is helpful, providing a listening ear and material support, and connecting you with community partners, from pregnancy until your child is a year old. We do not bill insurance, collect payment, or require anything from you in return.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about considering parenting

I do not feel ready to be a parent. Is that normal?

Yes. Most of the people who came to us did not feel ready when they found out they were pregnant. Readiness develops as the support around you develops. We can help you map out the support you have and what you might still need.

What financial help is available in Massachusetts?

MassHealth covers prenatal and infant care for eligible families. WIC covers nutritional support. Massachusetts also has paid family leave protections. We will help you sort through what you qualify for.

What if my partner does not support me?

You are not alone in this situation. We can help you think through how to talk with your partner, and we can connect you with support that does not depend on them. If he wants support of his own, our support for men and fathers is here for him too.

How do I find childcare?

Massachusetts has a state-subsidized childcare voucher program for income-eligible families. We can help you start the application and connect you with local providers in the Merrimack Valley.

Can my partner come to appointments?

Yes. Partners are welcome at any of our locations in Haverhill, Lawrence, or Lowell. We also offer parallel support for fathers.

Is parenting really the most common choice?

Yes. Most women facing an unexpected pregnancy ultimately choose to parent. The decision often becomes clearer once you have accurate information and a clearer picture of the support around you.
